Melior of Milana Synopsis
On the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Melior of Milana finds herself embroiled in a scheme to trap her into marriage with a neighboring king. After years of being threatened with warfare and marriage, Melior decides she must plot to prevent being overthrown by her own court. She is forced to work with the dangerously attractive General Tristan, who is too beautiful to be trustworthy, but her only chance at emerging victorious. Will Melior succeed in protecting her rightful place on the throne? Or is she simply destined to fail?
Tristan of Nindor takes great pride in the army he’s built for his uncle, King Phillip. When the king sends him to propose to a queen of a neighboring kingdom, Tristan expects her to be vain and foolish. Melior of Milana seems to be the opposite, leaving him frustrated and desiring in equal measure. Tristan knows he cannot trust anyone in this treacherous game of wits. After all, he has plans of his own, some of which could work in Melior’s favor. Or destroy her completely.

Chapter Four: Seeing him
I look forward to collapsing on my bed and getting some sleep. I am almost at the castle gates when I sense his presence. This one is good. He has evaded my senses for a while. I am surprised I didn’t catch him before. How long has he been following me? I stop walking and turn around. I can sense him, but it’s too dark for me to see him. I look in the direction I know he’s standing and say “It will be better for you if you come forward and face me yourself. Trust me you do not want me to come and get you.”
I widen my stance and prepare to fight. If the coward decides to flee, I am prepared to chase him down. I will not allow anyone to shadow me and get away without an explanation. The man is still hidden by the shadows, but I see some movement as if he has decided to come out after a brief hesitation on his part. He walks slowly and confidently. I am at once taken aback by his tall body and broad frame. This one will be a challenge. Good! The other four had been too easy. His face becomes visible in the moonlight, and now he is standing mere inches from me. I suck in my breath. It’s him.
Chapter Eight: Broken Bones
My body flies out of his castle and lands in an even more painful heap on the ground outside. The first thing I do as soon as I manage to sit up is scream. I don’t know if I’m screaming for the sheer agony my body is in, or if I’m simply furious at the man inside. Either way, I realize that it is not my style to sit still and scream. I need to pull myself together and fast. I have to meet him in the forest tomorrow. Which leaves me with only one day to get my body back together and travel the long arduous journey. I sigh. I give myself exactly one minute to feel sorry for myself. Then I grunt as I try to stand up.
Standing up is impossible right now of course. I have literally smashed both of my knees. I roll on the ground to try and figure out how to get up. I could transform into a bird, but I’ve never done it with a broken body before and decide not to risk it. I am getting more and more frustrated with each attempt to get up resulting in failure. Great Melior, I fume to myself. You can just stay here on the ground until you die. And then maybe he will be kind enough to bury you on his grounds. The thought of him sends me into a fit of fury again and I scream out every curse word I can think of. I am extra loud to make sure he can hear every word.
Suddenly I hear a soft laugh behind me. Oh brilliant, I am not alone. It is the deep masculine laugh of the man who has betrayed and deserted me not half an hour ago. To his credit though, Tristan gets control of his laughter rather quickly, and then politely clears his throat to officially announce his presence to me. I turn my neck around to glare at him. My neck is, after all, still functioning quite normally.
